BPI Exam Proctoring

Please call us to schedule your BPI exam: (503) 206-7470

You don’t have to purchase training to take a BPI Certification Exam. The two most common reasons for BPI certification exam proctoring without preparatory training are:

1) For BPI certified techs who wish to re-certify. The Building Performance Institute requires all certified techs to retake their certification exams every three years.

2) For new candidates who wish to challenge the exams. Sometimes people who have industry experience don’t need or want training to prepare for their Building Performance Institute (BPI) Certification Exams. That’s no problem; BPI allows candidates seeking certification to challenge the exams.

The ECONTC Training Center in Portland, OR has both a computer lab and a field home testing lab. Providing written and field exams at one location is easy and convenient whether you are looking to get BPI certified or renew your BPI certification.

Steps for Renewing BPI Certification

1. If you have earned 30 or more BPI CEUs in three years, then you do not need to take the BPI written exams to recertify; you only need to take the BPI field exams for each designation you hold.

 2. If you have earned 10 to 29 BPI CEUs in three years, then you do need to take the BPI written exams to recertify; you are allowed to take only the 50 question written exam rather than the 100 question exam.

 3. If you have earned 9 or fewer BPI CEUs in three years, then you do need to take the BPI written exams to recertify; your first exam will be a 100 question exam and all other BPI re-certification exams you take will be 50 question exams.

4. BPI certified individuals may take the required examinations for renewal up to six months prior to their date of their certification expiration. The renewed certification period begins from the date of expiration of the candidate’s initial certification.

Candidates who renew their certifications more than six months prior to their expiration date will have their new certification period begin immediately upon renewal.

You can take your BPI field exam in the lab at our Training Center, or for an additional fee ($100 within 20 miles of our office) we will come to your house. To qualify as a BPI test site the house you choose must:

1) At a minimum have one atmospherically vented combustion appliance
2) Be a place that will support the operation of a blower door and/or duct blower
3) Must NOT BE a potentially hazardous environment (Including but not limited to asbestos-like material, mold and mildew in excess of 10 square feet of surface area, etc)
4) A ducted distribution system (For Heating and A/C Heat Pump only!)
